EQUALITY FOR ALL IN UNION COUNTY

Since the election a lot of talk has been thrown around about making the Planning Boards and Board of Adjustment more fair to the entire county. The majority of commissioners believe this will be accomplished by disolving the boards and getting one representative from each of the nine townships. The township representation is something that had been utilized several years ago but I believe they had problems with keeping volunteers on the boards. Nethertheless, this current commissioner majority believe that the answer for the future in to go back into the past. A past much like "Mayberry" which never existed but something a bunch of people desire. An old saying comes to mind that "you can't live in the past". It would be nice if we could go back as a county and make things right, but once you open pandora's box, you can't get the stuff back in. A suggestion was made in the UC Planning board meeting that a fairer way of getting members for both boards would be to make it similar to that of the school board and the way they are elected. Lines would change every 10 years as the population shifts...and the entire county would be served also. You could keep the board at 7 regular members and 2 alternates. It seemed like a good idea for these boards though I suspect it will go over like a lead baloon with the commissioners.
So I am proposing that the commissioners expand their board also....to 7 members using the same type of process the school board is elected by. I really dislike the idea of districts and involvement of the feds to control or designate the county, but it is apparent something has to be done to invite diversification into this particular board. This board and the past two boards have indicated they all have a narrow focus when it comes to matters for the county. Too often a small influential group of people are served by a three member majority. This county, at the rate of growth, needs to expand to 7 members in hopes of different ideas, focus, concerns, and representation.
The present group of commissioners like to talk a good game, lets see if they are willing to take the extra step and admit that an expansion is necessary to move this county forward???

I would like to bring this is issue back to Indian Trail.
Considering the town of Indian Trail has a population of over 20,000 do you think it's time to;
1. Increase the size of the council from it's current 5 members to 6 or 7?
2. Convert the council from all at large elections to some form of district representation?
I would be interested in your thoughts and the comments of others that follow this blog

Gary,
Not sure, anything is possible. I know stallings has an expanded board with fewer residents. I have never been much of a fan of districting and until you asked I never have thought much about the possibility with IT. I think it would be worth looking into though.
Thanks for the question.
