ARE ALL RELIGIONS CREATED EQUAL?

Since the liquor by the drink issue came up briefly at the council meeting the other night it led me to wonder about the religions on the board. My guess that we have 3 Baptists (4 if you count the mayor) and 2 other (Catholic) I believe...
Of the Baptists, 2 indicated they were against LBTD no matter what. 1 Non Baptist stated the same. The other non Baptist and 2 other Baptist stated they would like more information. Which leads me to the question: Are all Baptists factions created equal? How is that 2 members of the council believe so staunchly about LBTD when 2 others don't feel the same? Is there different teachings in the Baptist church? Don't they all use the same type of bible? I just thought I would ask the questions.

LBTD is not a "denominational" issue. Implying it is, is unfair to the different denominations. I believe it is a matter of personal conviction. Our upbringing forms the basis and foundations of our convictions. I commend those who stand for their convictions. That being said, Lee, you need to get a life!

Anonymous,
I am just asking the question and not implying anything about the different denominations. It was a simple question and I was in hopes someone with more religious knowledge than myself could offer up an answer. LBTD is a topic that will bring out strong opinions on both sides of the coin. If it is a personal conviction then so be it. If its an economic issue thats ok too. I don't really think such a remark was was warranted about the question I posed. It is your opinion though. I was hoping to be enlightened with someone who could explain the different factions within the Baptist religion however. I commend those that stand for their convictions also, that doesn't mean I understand or agree with them though.

In retrospect my last remark was unwarranted and for that I apologize. I have had the opportunity to attend several of the council meetings in the past, but none lately. I am still intrigued by the political "soap opera". It's like a train wreck. I do commend your recent comments supporting the Mayor on some of the issues. I think she wants what she feels is best for the town. As far as LBTD vs religion, conservatives (religious right) are the most vocal. I was raised in an Independent Baptist church, currently attend a Southern Baptist, have family who are Methodist, and friends who are Catholic. Most (not all) Baptist Churches in this area are affliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The Independent Baptists are typically the most vocal against LBTD, primarily due to the "element" that they say it brings with it (i.e. bars, clubs, strip joints). It is easier for the leadership in the independent Baptist churches to rally the troops because they do not answer to committees, conventions, or dioceses, only God. Members of other denominations are also against it, but are less vocal because the leadership does not want to offend members of their congregation. I am not implying they are wrong but it is a fact. Because of this individuals are forced to be vocal out of personal conviction. There are chuch going people who are for it and non-church people who are against it. It's still tough for anyone against it to speak out because today's fast-paced MTV society is numb to the convictions of the past. It is a shame but you become labeled as a Bible thumping, Bush loving, warmonger if you are against LBTD and a liberal communist if you are for it. That statement may be extreme but there is some truth to it. But the reality is certain establishments will not come to Ind. Trail unless LBTD is passed. All of the studies and investigations will conclude with that fact. Ultimately Ind. Trail has to decide once and for all what identity it wants to have. Family oriented is wonderful and so is a thriving economic tax base. The question is can the two co-exist? In Ind. Trail?

Anonymous,
Let me just say that your last post by far was your best to date. I enjoyed reading it. I have to agree that IT needs to make a decision soon and needs to stick with it also. I am not sure if "family oriented" and "thriving econonmic tax base" can coexist. One thing is true though, we will never know without a serious look into the issue and whether it would cost more or produce more with LBTD. I was raised baptist, went to Catholic church a lot, and went to a Methodist based college. I will never claim to be an expert in religion because certain aspects I just don't understand. Again thanks for the post.
